Grade 7 Amazon Rainforest Debate: Fast Food Companies and Cargill

Fast Book Companies and Cargill

Cargill, a major supplier of animal feed, has been linked to deforestation in the Amazon rainforest for the production of soy and beef.  Cargill has built a port and 13 soya storage works in the Amazon region, providing farmers with seeds and agrochemicals to grow hundreds of thousands of tonnes of beans. The company has pledged not to buy soybeans from land deforested in the Amazon after 2008, and last year committed to moving faster to eliminate deforestation in supply chains. Fast food companies such as McDonald's, Tesco, Morrisons, and Marks and Spencer have been linked to Cargill. These companies buy their chicken and soy from Cargill, which feeds its chickens with soy grown in the Amazon rainforest.  Students will research Cargill and how their practices may or may not contribute to deforestation.
