When people think of the Amazon, they may first think of all the plant and animal species that call it home. However, there are human beings whose home is in the Amazon, and their homes, culture, and lives are threatened by deforestation. Traditional tribal societies have lived in the Amazon for thousands of years. They have human rights including a right to live on their ancestral homeland. Students in this group will understand the threats indigenous people are facing in the Amazon and how preserving the Amazon is necessary to protect these societies from extinction. This group will research websites of organizations that act to protect rights of indigenous people along with articles about the threats they are facing
